ADVENT PREPARATIONS

Over the years, I’ve been called “Scrooge” a few times.  For a number of years, my family asked me to put up Christmas lights outside our house, like many do for Christmas.  I resisted partly because I already have extra work to do for Christmas; so I didn’t have time for outside lights.  Secondly, some church members would probably complain that we were wasting the church’s money (since the church paid the electric bill for the manse).  Also, I didn’t want to have to go outside to take the lights down after Christmas.

Every December, our family goes for a drive to enjoy the outdoor Christmas lights.  That often leads to a conversation about which lights reflect the real meaning of Christmas, and which lights do not.

I suspect that many of us would rather enjoy more meaningful and less commercialized Christmas.  Here are a few ways to add meaning and purpose to your Advent and Christmas:

Mary & Joseph were poor and struggling.  With a friend or family member, do something to help the needy.   Make a donation to a food or clothing ministry.  Offer a gift to someone you know who’s going through a tough time.

Some struggle with loneliness or depression during this season.  Offer a listening ear or a word of encouragement to someone who is lonely or feeling down, or invite them to do something with you.

The angels sang, Glory to God in the highest!  Play (and sing, if you wish) your favorite Christmas music.  Close your eyes while you listen.

Read Matthew 1 or part of Luke 1-2.

Share your memories of past Christmases, and share why Christmas is special to you.

Plan to come the the Church Candlelight Program on Sun., Dec. 21, at 5 pm, and invite a friend.

Attend our Christmas Eve service at 4 pm.  We will receive the Lord’s Supper.

Advent is here.   Christ is coming.  Will you be ready?

                                                            Wishing you peace & joy,
